Part Three:
Jane Austen, Politicized

Long before anyone was getting exercised about Jane Austen being embraced by the "alt-right," conservatives, moderates, and liberals were putting the author front and center in political arguments that raged in their own time. It started as early as the House of Commons in 1872.

Part Four of The Making of Jane Austen, "Jane Austen, Politicized," looks at the men's clubs debates over Austen, politics, and femininity in Ch. 8. In Ch. 9, the book turns to suffragist uses of Austen in street protests, stage plays, and costume parties. Further images for illuminating those contents are below.

Is  It  right  for  your  book  club?

Yes, definitely! The paperback edition now includes a brief reader's guide with discussion questions. I'd love to hear from you if you're considering choosing it.

This book works best in clubs familiar with Austen's fiction OR its film adaptations. (You could read or watch Pride and Prejudice and then choose this book.)
