Long before anyone was getting exercised about Jane Austen being embraced by the "alt-right," conservatives, moderates, and liberals were putting the author front and center in political arguments that raged in their own time. It started as early as the House of Commons in 1872.
Part Four of The Making of Jane Austen, "Jane Austen, Politicized," looks at the men's clubs debates over Austen, politics, and femininity in Ch. 8.
